I think of FFVIII as a missed opportunity. Playing through the first disc I thought this was the best game ever made, it started sooooo well. But then after the first disc the story fell apart, the scene on the basketball court where they suddenly remember they all grew up together is surely the most cringeworthy scene in any game, ever. Seriously lazy writing, it feels like they were forced to rush the game to a deadline or something. The junction system also forces you to not use magic as you get weaker with each use. Still an outstanding game but I can only focus on the few small things that if fixed, would have made this right up among the all time greatest.
